WHAT IS WOODLAND MANAGEMENT?

Woodland Management is a sustainable process used to cut trees or shrubs to ground level. Although it sounds like a harsh process and treatment, coppicing actually encourages the natural growth pattern of trees, particularly if a root system has been used to supplying a large tree, coppicing allows it to use its energy to produce new growth and foliage.

Our most asked questions?

  • At what age can trees be coppiced?

Many trees traditionally need to be coppiced at around 7 – 15 years.
  • How much noise will you make?

The process of coppicing involves the use of some machinery and equipment such as chainsaws, therefore causing some unavoidable noise. However, we always aim to work quickly and efficiently to ensure that levels of disruption are kept to a minimum.
  • How much does coppicing cost?

Due to the many factors that may influence the cost, such as the location, the size of the tree or trees, accessibility and more, there is no average cost for coppicing. We recommend getting in touch for a free no-obligation quote.
  • Will you need access to my home?

As long as there is substantial external access around your property that we can use to move our equipment and any waste through, we won’t need access inside your home.
  • Can I coppice a tree myself?

Although it is possible to coppice a tree yourself, due to the dangers linked with using the machinery and the process involved, we recommend contacting an expert to complete the work for you.

Is woodland management good for trees?

Coppicing was once a vital part of woodland management and previous provided fuel and building and fencing materials to many communities. Today, coppicing is used to increase biodiversity, open up landscapes and to encourage a wider range of flora and fauna. Based on our experience and knowledge, we can confidently say that coppicing is good for trees for many reasons…

  • Encourages the growth of trees.
  • Promotes tree health.
  • Lengthens the lifespan of trees
  • Creates a ‘coup’ which allows heat and light to reach the ground.
  • Encourages flora and fauna to flourish.
  • Wood can be used towards sustainable living.

What Other Tree Surgery Services Do We Offer?

Pollarding

Pollarding keeps trees and shrubs smaller than they would naturally grow by removing the top of a tree at a specific height, this also encourages multi-stem branching.

Tree stump grinding

We can remove problematic tree stumps by grinding down the main stump to below ground level and removing any extensive root systems with specialist equipment.

Tree crown work

The purpose of tree crown work is to maintain the form and structural integrity of the tree by reducing its height or spread by pruning back the leaders and branch terminals.

Coppicing

Coppicing is a proven traditional woodland management method that focuses on stimulating new tree growth by repeatedly cutting it back to near ground level.

Avant hire

We also now offer our Avant 640 and 755i for hire with timber grab, tree shear attachment, log grapple, and materials bucket.

Is pollarding the same as woodland management?

Although they work towards the same goal, pollarding and coppicing differ. If a tree or shrub is cut close to ground level, the process is called coppicing. However, if the process takes place further up the trunk, this is known as pollarding.

When should woodland management be done?

We recommend coppicing trees and shrubs in late winter or early spring (February to March) before they come into active growth.
